Charting: If I turn my chart upside down, I might see a pregnancy signYes, I have analyzed just about every chart in every way possible when trying for a baby. Some lucky women have signs of implant on their charts. I am not one of those. I studied my charts for lots of time, searching for some sign. Each of my charts was different, with different ovulation dates and different luteal phase patterns. Sometimes I would have higher temps than others. There were never signs like a triphasic chart or implant dip or ovulation spotting. I just am one of the majority that just had to wait it out till the end of the cycle to see if menses came or not. There are a few signs we might see, but none of these are definite, for sure pregnancy signs. Some lucky women get these signs and can be hopeful these may turn into pregnancy signs. Sometimes, they do occur in a non-pregnancy chart. First, there's implant spotting. This sign is a fairly rare and ambiguous sign. It will be a brief one day bit of spotting that can be lighter or heavier around implant time (7-10 days past ovulation). Luteal phase spotting can happen for a variety of reasons. We do recommend you report all unexplained luteal phase spotting/bleeding to your healthcare provider as they can help you find why you're spotting/bleeding. In this link, you will find a FAQ on Luteal Phase spotting. |

Charting: OH, THE EMPOWERMENT!!!After years of marriage and finally feeling “ready” to start a family back in late 1994, I did my research and found information on charting. At that time, I was rather limited on the internet and simply charted on paper by hand. I did use a basal thermometer as instructed and when we miscarried then conceived again the next cycle, I laid out all my paper charts and video taped them to document the moment. Oh, how proud I was to see how I had noted my temps and some fertile cervical mucus to help me out on that journey. It was years later that I pulled out that tape. When we were ready to try to conceive again, the internet and information had come a long way. Wanting to have as much information as possible on file, I pulled out the video and copied the information so I could plug the data in and have some more statistical data. Oh, gosh, what an eye opener that was! I then realized how far charting had come in those 5 years…and what a pitiful charter I was. There were so many rules I really didn’t follow the first time and as the cycles progressed on my newest “trying to conceive” journey, I saw what a great difference that could make. My biggest flaw the first time was that I simply temped when I first woke up…whenever that might be. While this works OK for some women, it’s really best to temp at the same time each morning and I could see a difference in the temp fluctuations. The Fertility Friend Handbook was so helpful in laying out the importance of temping using a basal thermometer, at the same time each day, the moment you wake up, before doing anything and after 3 hours sleep. I’d give it a try and sure enough, my patterns looked a lot better. |

Charting: Back to the Basics: TempingBack to the Basics--TempingWhen taking a hiatus from charting or starting charting for the first time, it's helpful to review the basics of temperature taking. Always use a BBT thermometer. This is specially designed for charting. It is more accurate for charting than a fever thermometer. As long as it's a BBT thermometer, it is your preference as to whether to use a digital or glass thermometer. I used digital just because it's easier for me to read a digital readout. Do your very best to temp at the same time every morning. Even a 15 minute fluctuation in time can affect temps. Set an alarm if you must. For me, if I temped an hour later I could expect the temp to be more inaccurate. I learned this through months of charting. You can see patterns like this after charting a few cycles. If you work shifts you may find this FAQ helpful. If you have other reasons you can't temp at the same time every day, review this FAQ by clicking on this link. Regardless, always note the time you temped accurately on the chart. |

Charting: Sometimes You Really Do Just Have To Laugh!!!Alrighty! We’re ready for a baby! Woohooo! So when you stop all the cost and effort to avoid (and you just knew somehow you’d be that teeny tiny percentage that ended up with an “oopsie” when preventing), why the heck is it taking so long?! OK, OK. I’ve read the stats. I know that it’s a “chance” thing. Only about 15-25% chance of conceiving in any given cycle. But why does it have to be so hard? And why me? And why is it taking longer than that even and when we conceive I then have a miscarriage? And why am I the only woman in my family and group of friends having this problem? I can’t count the amazing number of “accidents” I’ve heard of while we watch cycle after cycle pass or how everyone else got pregnant the first time they tried. Here we are wanting something soooo badly and not being able to do it. And then to hear the horrors on the news. This is not fair! And is it me…or does it seem that there are nice, big, round pregnant bellies everywhere especially the very day your period makes her grand entrance?! This has not been the easy task we thought it would when we first slyly smiled at one another and decided to start our family. Not at all. |
